Background

For a number of years the ’empty’ corner of the old churchyard was where the compost heap was kept. In 2019, as part of research for The Settle Graveyard Project, it was discovered that the compost heap was located on top of a number of babies’ unmarked graves.
Local volunteers gathered to clear the area and Settle Coal, a local company arranged to collect and dispose of the compost on our behalf.

With the area now clear and nothing to show of the babies graves, it was suggested that we should put a memorial in place to mark the graves of the ‘forgotten’ babies. Research shows that 22 children, all under the age of 5, are buried in the small corner of the graveyard.
It is hoped that the Children’s Corner will become a place of comfort to all who have lost their own babies.

With Covid behind us and planning in place, the funding to complete the work is underway. The ‘Mock-up‘ image gives an idea of what they area might look like. The plan is to insert the memorial into the existing wall with the stones of the sun rays commemorating the children. Over time the area will be developed to meet the needs of those who visit the area.
