The Red Book
The Red book was compiled by Thomas Brayshaw (1854 – 1931), a local solicitor and historian. It is an elaborate ‘scrapbook’ of Brayshaw’s time and contains a wealth of photographs, newspaper cuttings, church notices, pamphlets and adverts. Many of these are annotated by Brayshaw himself. The major reordering of the church (1890-92) is recorded in the book and it is a treasure trove of historical photographs and information.
The Red Book was given to St. Alkelda’s Church in 1973 and is available for viewing at The Brayshaw Library at Giggleswick School. The book is also available to view online in its entirety on The Yorkshire Dales Community Archive and can be found here.
